The Tam News Gets a New Lab
By Jennifer Wolfe
The Tam News, Tam High’s leading journalism publication has a new computer lab with 15 new Mac work stations, providing students with top-of-the-line editing capabilities for its broadcast and print work. This lab was made possible through the support of the Tam High Foundation, which gave a major grant to the Journalism program in 2015.
“The Tam High Foundation has been instrumental in making The Tam News one of the finest high school journalism organizations in the country,” said teacher and Tam News advisor Jonah Steinhart. “When the students wanted to expand their video program over the past three years, the Foundation was there to provide professional-quality video equipment and an all-Mac computer lab devoted to journalism. And every year, through mini-grants, the Foundation has been able to provide new and replacement equipment, such as a lighting system this year as the students improve their in-class studio capabilities.” added Steinhart.
Previously, the Journalism lab only contained three Macs for editing and numerous dated Dell PC’s that did not contain editing capability. With more students entering the program eager to contribute on the multimedia side of the publication, it was essential to offer greater technology. The publication continues to innovate, building upon last year’s launch of a Tam News phone app for Android and iOS and increased efforts to leverage various social media platforms to push content into the community. In fact, a Tam News article published last year received nearly 50,000 views within 24 hours of being pushed out on social media. The new Macs will make this innovative journalism possible.
This month, The Tam News won two “top 3” National Scholastic Press Association Story of the Year Awards out of only 15 across the entire country for all articles published during the last school year. Simultaneously, the students learned that the Columbia Scholastic Press Association had nominated The Tam News for their prestigious Crown Award, as one of the top publications in the country. The Tam High Foundation makes this possible by supporting the hard work and talent of the students, helping to create a community that values student journalism, and giving students the tools they need to be successful.
